Torres Shire Council advises that it has adopted a Seizure and Disposal of Abandoned Vehicles Policy, (Reference Min 08/08/19), which pursuant to Section 100, Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act, 1995, will enable Council to:

Remove any abandoned vehicles to a storage compound for a defined period where the vehicles will be available for the legitimate owner to claim,

Sell the abandoned vehicle by either tender or auction,

Convey to the Horn Island Waste Landfill Facility if the vehicle is deemed to be in a
dilapidated condition beyond economical repair.
In accordance with Section 48 of the same Act, Council has the power to recover costs
from the owner/user of the vehicle for the costs incurred in seizure of such vehicle.
A notice will be placed on a prominent position of the vehicle for a period of seven (7) days
to enable the owner/user time to relocate the vehicle.
