CONSTRUCTION WORKS

  • Works continue on the Sailor & Bowie Crescents’ connection street. Traffic disruptions and dust problems may occur during construction. All drivers and pedestrians are requested to be aware of heavy vehicles during these works.

ENGINEERING SERVICES

  • New Director Engineering Services, Derek Wiseman, commenced duties on 10th August.
  • New 240 litre garbage trolley bins commence soon; collection will be once per week. All bins must face the road for collection by the new truck which is scheduled to commence operation in September.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION QUEENSLAND ANNUAL CONFERENCE

  • Mayor Pedro Stephen, Cr. Bill Shibasaki and CEO Bernie McCarthy will attend the 113th LGAQ annual conference from 23rd to 27th August at the Brisbane Convention Centre.

HORN ISLAND REGIONAL AIRPORT – RUNWAYS UPGRADE

  • Following a review of the airport project work scope, Council continues to seek funding for a reduced amount of approx. $3 million. Support of all Torres Strait region depts., organizations & businesses is still urged to help Council obtain the necessary funds.

LIBRARY

  • Visit our well resourced library and explore the excellent range of books, DVDs, etc.

STREET NUMBERING

  • Display your property number clearly; information can be obtained from our Rates Officer, ph 4069 1336.

TOURISM

  • The Torres Shire tourism development plan is now finalized and is available for perusal.
  • Excellent range of TSC souvenirs for sale; including glasses, mugs, bags and caps.

SPORT COMPLEXES

  • Thursday Island Phone Complex Manager on 4069 1192 to inquire about all programs and activities.
  • Horn Island Friday nights 6 – 9pm, Saturdays 6 - 9pm; complex can be hired for competitions.

ANIMAL CONTROL

  • 2009/10 Registration for all dogs over 3 months is now due; wandering dogs will incur, heavy penalties apply; permit required for more than 2 dogs being kept on one property.

COUNCIL MEETING

  • Next Ordinary meeting on Tuesday 18th August. All confirmed meeting minutes on our website.
  • Please note that the October monthly meeting will be held at the Ngurupai Sport Complex. The public is invited to attend any Ordinary meeting.
