Torres Shire Council has welcomed the visit of the Hon Richard Marles MP, Acting Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minster and Minister for Defence during his stopover in the Torres Strait. He was joined by the Hon Andrew Giles MP Minister for Skills and Training.
The visit was held at the 51st Battalion FNQR Sarpeye Company Barracks and coincided with a Morning Tea hosted by MAJ Higgins OC to honour the 2026 Torres Strait NAIDOC Award recipients.
Mayor Elsie Seriat OAM said the visit provided an important opportunity to highlight the strategic significance of the Torres Strait as Australia's northern border region and discuss the challenges and opportunities facing local communities.
"The Torres Strait plays a critical role in Australia's national security, border protection, emergency response and regional connectivity," Mayor Seriat said.
"We welcome opportunities to engage directly with senior members of the Australian Government and to advocate for investment in infrastructure, services and initiatives that strengthen our communities and support national interests."
The Mayor acknowledged the Australian Defence Force's longstanding presence and contribution to the Torres Strait and expressed Council's appreciation for ongoing engagement with local communities.
Torres Shire Council looks forward to continuing constructive discussions with the Australian Government on priorities that support resilient, connected and sustainable communities across the Torres Strait.
